.without you i am nothing: a homage to free culture_, a project by .-_-. , was made possible by appropriating 36 free/libre works, and could have never been possible otherwise. the project even appropriates the cliche love phrase “without you i am nothing” as its name_

. all instances of .without you i am nothing: a homage to free culture_ are “unique” and cannot be experienced for the second time. thus it features an endless example of creativity, the source of which is inherit in the previous creative works, which have also possibly been built on what came before them. the process of making this work is the real artistic experience for .-_-. in this work, besides the final product of 36 superimposed videos edited. .without you i am nothing: a homage to free culture_ can also be considered as a moving abstract expressionist painting_

.everything we come up with are in fact a product of our past experiences, thus nothing is original, all work is appropriation, “all creative work is derivative” and “everything is a remix“_

.this work couldn’t have been possible without appropriating other works; without them it was nothing. the authors of the appropriated works encouraged others to copy, share and build on it in a free way by stating their politics on this through free licenses and even without using any kind of a license but through their declaration. they are the peers of free culture. this work is a homage to these authors and to free culture_

.the technique of this work consists of just blending the 36 attributed free videos and slowing down the final video with a color correction. in the online installation, there are two looped ogg theora videos with durations of 33 seconds and 19 seconds playing on the same frame (div) on each other, one with a transparency of 0.5 (made with css). since the videos start playing in different times, because of difference in download durations in each visit of the web page and since they loop in different durations, each image you will see in each visit of the video page will be different than your other experiences and it will be unique. this is the endless possibility of appropriation for creativity.

.the works appropriated in this project are free/libre to be copied, shared, appropriated, even for commercial purposes. even though this work, like all other work of .-_-. is free/libre and .copyleft!_, for .-_-. permitting even commercial use is important for the politics of free culture to create another economics.

.this work takes “the definition of free cultural works” by erik möller, as a reference for free/libre works that constitute the free culture. many licenses of creative commons that have “no derivatives” and “non-commercial” clauses restrict appropriation and commercial use. many of the creative commons licensed works have these clauses and they just create a simulacrum of free culture.

.all the works appropriated in this work are either licensed with one of the licenses listed for free cultural works (Free Art License, GNU GPL, CC by, CC by-sa) or in public domain, or have their own statements encouraging copying, sharing, appropriation and even commercial use. if any of these freedoms is not declared in their statement, .-_-. asked about their ideas and politics about these freedoms to the authors of the works and got approval to include in this work_

. there are many other free cultural works. the works attributed in this project are just some of the free/libre videos in accordance with the politics of this project_

.this project would have never been possible
without appropriating the following free/libre works/projects_
